Letter II - Left at the Base, Beneath a Feather

The Feather

"Some things should stay where they were true."

To my beloved Black Feathers,

By the time you read this, I'll be gone, and my feather will be lying where this letter was, and I want you to know that setting it down was the hardest thing I've done in a life that has included harder things than any of you know.

Let me begin with what was real, because everything else I'm about to say will land wrong if you doubt this part. The night the world folded and dropped that gala on this island, I was a stranger in the crowd holding a false name, and you reached out anyway. You fed me before you trusted me. You trusted me before I'd earned it. You gave me rank, and work that mattered, and a seat where decisions were made, and, rarest of all, people who believed in me for who I was standing in front of them, not for who I might one day be useful as. I need you to understand how foreign that was. I was raised among people who only ever loved the future version of me, the one who would eventually sit where they pointed. You were the first to look at the man actually in the room. I have belonged to enormous things before. I had never, until you, belonged to something that would have noticed if I went missing.

Which is why I owe you the truth before I owe you anything else.

My name is not Solen Verai. The name I was born under is stitched into banners hanging in halls on worlds you've never heard of, because my family does not rule a country. They rule a sky. Planets, moons, the spaces between them, a crown that casts its shadow across entire systems. I was third in line for all of it, raised in palaces where the windows looked out on other worlds we owned, and I have never once in my life been asked what I wanted, only what I would accept. When the answer became nothing, I ran. I crossed a distance you would need new words to measure, folded up a name heavy enough to anchor fleets, and built a lighter man out of wit and nerve and a smile I practiced until it fit.

That man walked out of a ruined gala and into your ranks, and you made him real. I need you to understand the size of what I'm telling you: I traded an empire of stars for a borrowed name and an empty pocket, and the first time the trade felt like a bargain was the first night I sat among you and someone asked my opinion like it mattered. I'm telling you now because I'm leaving, and I refuse to leave the way I arrived. If you keep one honest thing of mine, keep this: I was never who I said I was, and I was always who I showed you.

Now the part I've rewritten a dozen times, hoping it would come out softer. It doesn't. It shouldn't.

One of us killed Venti. The rest of you chose silence, and an innocent is being fitted for the blame, and you have been asking me, in a hundred wordless ways, to look elsewhere. To be a little less myself. And here is what none of you could have known: I have stood in this exact room before. My family buries truths the way other families bury their dead, with ceremony, with unanimity, with a shovel pressed into every hand so that no one is innocent enough to speak. They asked me to dig once. It's why I ran. I gave up a throne the size of a sky because I would not stand beside a burial and call it duty, and I will not do for love what I refused to do for a crown.

You deserve to hear where I'm going from me and not from rumor. The Fingers have opened their doors, and before the word traitor finishes forming, sit with this: they found a way to bring Venti back. The woman everyone mourned as murdered. They are reaching into the dark to pull her out, while we hold someone under and call it loyalty, and I cannot make those weigh the same no matter how I adore you all. And I do adore you. That's what makes this feel less like walking through a door and more like pulling a blade out slowly, knowing the bleeding starts when it's finally free.

I held the feather for an hour tonight. Ran my thumb along the spine of it like I could memorize the weight, the way I still sometimes catch my hand reaching for a crown I haven't worn in years. I almost pinned it back on. I want that written down, that I almost stayed, because the almost is the truest measure of what you were to me.

I don't want to go. That's the plainest sentence in this letter, and the truest, and it changes nothing, which is how I know the leaving is real.

But my eyes don't close. I've tried. God, this week, how I've tried.

Keep each other. Keep the warmth. A man with a false name walked into your house and you made him real, and he is leaving the feather behind not because it stopped mattering but because it never stopped, and some things should stay where they were true.
